Organizations and Events Supporting LGBT Powerlifting

The sport of powerlifting, characterized by raw strength and discipline, has traditionally been viewed through a lens that often overlooks the diversity of its athletes. In recent years, however, there has been a significant movement towards inclusivity, with various organizations and events emerging to support LGBT powerlifters. These initiatives not only provide platforms for competition, but also foster communities where athletes can express themselves authentically.

LGBT Powerlifting Union

The LGBT Powerlifting Union (LGBT PLU), founded in 2017, is a pioneering organization dedicated to creating a safe and inclusive environment for LGBT athletes in the sport of powerlifting. Based in the United Kingdom but with a global reach, the union’s mission is to promote equality and diversity within powerlifting.

Key Initiatives:

  • Inclusive Competitions: The LGBT PLU organizes competitions that feature categories for male, female, and Mx (gender-neutral) lifters, ensuring that non-binary and transgender athletes have a place to compete comfortably.
  • Advocacy: Working with national and international powerlifting federations to develop inclusive policies and practices.
  • Community Building: Providing resources and support networks for LGBT powerlifters worldwide.

International LGBT Powerlifting Championships

Organized by the LGBT Powerlifting Union, the International LGBT Powerlifting Championships is an annual event that welcomes athletes from around the globe. Since its inception, the championships have grown significantly, highlighting the talent and dedication of LGBT powerlifters.

Highlights:

  • Mx Category: A groundbreaking addition that allows non-binary athletes to compete without being forced into traditional gender categories.
  • Global Participation: Attracting competitors from countries such as the USA, Australia, Ireland, and Germany.
  • Positive Impact: Promoting visibility and acceptance of LGBT athletes within the wider powerlifting community.

Gay Games

The Gay Games, established in 1982, is one of the world’s largest sporting and cultural events aimed at promoting inclusivity and diversity. Powerlifting has been a featured sport since the early editions of the games.

Features:

  • Open Participation: Athletes of all sexual orientations and gender identities are encouraged to participate, fostering a spirit of inclusion.
  • International Representation: Drawing thousands of athletes from over 70 countries.
  • Cultural Exchange: Combining sports with cultural events to celebrate diversity and unity.

Transgender & Non-Binary Powerlifting Championships

Founded by trans powerlifter JayCee Cooper, the Transgender & Non-Binary Powerlifting Championships provide a dedicated platform for transgender and non-binary athletes.

Objectives:

  • Safe Environment: Creating a competition space free from discrimination and misgendering.
  • Visibility and Advocacy: Highlighting the achievements of transgender and non-binary athletes to challenge stereotypes.
  • Community Support: Offering resources and networking opportunities for participants.

Due to their efforts, some national powerlifting federations have begun adopting more inclusive policies.

The Canadian Powerlifting Union (CPU) has made significant strides in developing policies that respect athletes’ gender identities, allowing them to compete in the category that aligns with their identity. This progressive approach sets a positive example for other organizations.

On the other hand, USA Powerlifting (USAPL) has faced criticism for its policies regarding transgender athletes. Despite this, ongoing advocacy efforts aim to encourage USAPL to adopt more inclusive practices, highlighting the continuous push for equality within the sport.
